The Cook's Atelier Handwoven Market Basket
Handwoven in Kenya
Our handwoven market basket is specifically designed for and exclusive to The Cook’s Atelier.
We fell in love with this handmade market basket woven by artisan women weavers in Kenya when we were invited to speak at a UNESCO event last year in Paris. The traditional method used for weaving these one-of-a-kind baskets is known as kiondo basketry. This tradition and treasured heritage reflects a cultural undertone of connectedness and continuity. They are crafted from hand-harvested, high-quality natural vegetable fiber from organic sisal plants, Agave sisalana, which are abundant in Kenya and praised for their green cultivation and environmentally protective properties. The baskets take several weeks to make and each one reflects the hand and story of the particular weaver. Not only beautiful, these baskets are durable, eco-friendly, easy to care for, and extremely versatile.
These unique and one-of-a-kind baskets help to economically empower women within the rural community, conserve the local environment, and ensure the preservation of tradition and cultural heritage.
Measures approximately 40 cm x 40 cm x 25 cm. Each basket is slightly different in natural hue and size. High quality leather finishes the edges and creates the sturdy handles. No two are alike.
To clean, simply wipe the basket with a damp cloth, shape it while still wet, and leave to dry.
